Grampian Guild

About

Our group has a place for anyone who is interested in textile crafts – not only weaving, spinning and dyeing, but also felting, braiding and more…. The Guild has monthly meetings, informal workdays, tutored workshops, informal local spinning groups, a weave study group, a newsletter, an extensive library and equipment for hire. Members are happy to share information and skills, so it is easy for beginners to progress.

We welcome members from as far as Newfoundland and as near as Aberdeen.

Hello, my name is Elana.

I have been learning to spin by myself, with occasional guidance from Dora Osborne and would really like to join the Guild. I live in Aberdeen and on occasion may find it difficult to attend (I have Fibromyalgia which can flare up without warning) but would do my utmost to get to as many meetings as possible.

Spinning has become a real passion for me and I would be keen to aim for doing the Association of Guilds certificate of achievement!

Hi Elana, I have sent you an email with more information in it. Welcome to the Guild!

Hi, I am hoping to come along on Saturday with a view to joining the Guild and learning to spin properly and taste some other associated crafts.etc. Do I need to bring anything special and can you advise re cost etc.

Hi Celia,
You will be most welcome at the workday, they are very informal. Please bring whatever you want to work on – so perhaps a drop spindle and some prepared fibre, or a spinning wheel if you have one. You might also need a niddy-noddy (although you can make a skein around your arm if you need to) and a pair of hand cards if you have them.
It would be a good idea to bring a packed lunch as there is nowhere to buy lunch in Chapel of Garioch to the best of my knowledge. Also some money – you can pay for just the workday as a visitor (which I think is around £2, or thereabouts) or you can pay for a year’s membership subscription which is currently £18, and gives you access to all the workdays (and mini-workshops), the guild library, and quarterly newsletters. There are also full day workshops which are available to members on a first-com, first-served basis, for an additional fee. These are listed in the Guild’s calendar on the main page.

The guild has some equipment available to hire, but come along to any workday and there are always spinners there, usually with their own wheels. We are a friendly bunch, and there is usually someone who will give you some help, and maybe let you try their wheel!
Our next meeting is the AGM in January, we will be having a pot-luck lunch after as we had to cancel our December lunch due to bad weather.
Hope to see you at a meeting soon!
Susan Bromiley (chair)

I am interested in joining the guild.
I came along when you had a visit by Wingham Wool and one of your members mentioned that you have equipment for hire for members. i was wondering if the guild have a pair of wool combs for hire?
Do you have informal meetings every week?
Kind regards,
Susan Atkinson
